Tips 'n Toes

Spa services like manicures, pedicures, massages, waxing, plucking, and more are all available at much cheaper rates in the UAE. If you're wondering why, consider that there are really no laws regulating the industry and the fact that employees are paid very little. A pedicure can cost as little as 20 dirhams (approximately $5.60 USD) or 100 dirhams (approximately $28 USD). This particular place is a bit more 'high-end'. It's location, a on Khaleej al Arabi Street, likely appeals to clients with more money.

Oh that is so sad. I wonder how they put food on the table for their kids! Thanks for sharing this, hope they at least get good tips (!)

Hi Lisa,
It is sad. Tipping is customary, good tipping...not so much. It really depends on the individual. Women in these jobs typically leave behind a husband and children in the Philippines. They're accommodation is generally provided by the employer, and it typically involves sharing a bedroom with at least one other colleague. With all of that said, many of them are supporting entire families back home on their meager wages. It's very common to hear that they've bought a home in Manila for their mother, or that they have paid for a number of medical expenses. It becomes the responsibility of the individual consumer in the UAE to tip in order to off-set the exceptionally low wages.

I can't imagine how hard it would be to leave behind a child! Mashallah for the UAE women(presumably mostly expats?) who support them.
