Bridge Over Not-So-Troubled Water

Slow Down!!!

The number one cause of death for young males in the UAE is car accidents. Nearly every single student I teach has lost a relative or friend to the road mania here. Couple a general aversion to safety belts to way too much testosterone in very big cars, and you have a recipe for disaster. This sign reads: Talking on the phone while driving can deprive your children of their mother's love. Funny that this targets women chatting on the phone, when we are but a small fraction of drivers on the road AND stastitically less likely to be the ones causing accidents.

A Peaceful Friday Morning on 32nd Street

Friday morning is, quite possibly, the most peaceful time of the week. It's not often that I look in my mirrors and see no cars.

A Foggy Lens and a Mug of Tea on the Beach

There was another shot similar to this with a clean lens, but this one was framed better. We were asked to invigilate/proctor a high school exit exam this past weekend. This particular one took place in the emirate of Fujeirah on the Indian Ocean coast of the UAE. I went down a day early with a friend, and we awoke to what was, quite possibly, the worst humidity I've experienced in a very long time. We put on our bathing suits, grabbed a cup of tea, and walked down to the water at about 7:00 am. The sweat rolled off of us, and it took several minutes for my camera lens to adjust. The ugly hotel you see tucked into the mountains is Le Meridien. We were staying at the Rotana beside it. More photos of this weekend to come...

Girls' Weekend Getaway

My friends and I have visited Imar Spa in the past. It's a short trip from Dubai, located in the emirate of Um al Quwain. As it's a women-only spa, I can't take the camera into the common areas. These were taken around our rooms.

Harley Fans Have Hope in Abu Dhabi

No matter how bad you think you've got it...

...there is always someone else who is much worse off. This is a pretty familiar site around the UAE. Mid-day temperatures soar, and manual labourers seek shelter from the sun under the palms.
